House in the Woodlands

In today’s special post, I present a house that I designed a couple of years ago for my parents. The building won the Special Prize of the 2018 House of the Year Awards Hungary.

The small family residence is located in the hilly woodlands of Western Hungary. The gable roofed house features a simple, rectangular floor plan. The kitchen, living and main bedroom are on the first floor, while the smaller guest rooms and a common work / play area are located on the second floor under the roof.

The harsh weather takes a toll on the buildings at this otherwise scenic location, so the building needed strong materials that can withstand the elements. The walls are built of thick, insulating clay blocks, the roofing is made of zinc sheet, and the deck floor and wall are covered with larch wood planks.
